A St Mary Mi Come From committed to charity

Now celebrating its 10th anniversary, A St Mary Mi Come From — the annual stage-show promoted by cultural artiste, Capleton, — remains committed to charitable endeavours.
From the inception, the event has been devoted to giving back in a meaningful way and this year, the organisers say they have even bigger goals.
"When Capleton started A St Mary Mi Come From, it was always with the intention of having the event getting bigger and better each year as we demonstrate unity as an artistic community and spread the love. We take this opportunity to thank those artistes who reserve the date for us every year and never ask for a dollar. And we cant leave out the all the others who work with us to make the show happen." said chairperson of the planning Committee, Claudette Kemp.
According to Kemp, the event has definitely grown. She explained that 'A St Mary Mi Come From' is now recognised as one of the most anticipated calendar events locally and that from as early as February the buzz gets started.
"The event is viewed by young artistes as a platform to showcase their talent, and this is the way we intended. Plus, the proceeds are used to bring to life our targeted projects for that year. And sometimes we even get involved in things that we didn't plan for," Capleton's manager said.
"Like the time when we were approached to assist with the airfare for students who were returning to school overseas," she said.
For the past nine years, this event has sought to enrich lives, whether through the children's treat which happens on the day of the event, or through the donation of equipment to schools or police youth clubs in St Mary and adjoining parishes.
"From the outset, we've had the kiddies treat which takes place in the day. Hundreds of children from various communities turn up and enjoy free rides; we have special snacks for them and of course, back-to-school supplies. They look forward to it and the parents really appreciate the effort. Capleton is committed to making the kids have a great time, even if it means that he has to sponsor this part of the event," his manager, Kemp, said.
Capleton himself is quoted as saying that as one of the youngest veterans he needs to "set proper footprints on the sands of time".
This event provides the vehicle to give in a tangible way, not to blow his own trumpet, but rather to have something positive that the youth can look at and know that Capleton was instrumental in making it happen.
"It's a good feeling to do something that benefit the community in terms of the growth and the development. We have donated to schools, built a computer lab at school, given an X-ray machine to hospital, donate to reform centres, to community centres, football clubs, netball clubs and police youth clubs. No matter how small, it is important that we do it," Capleton emphasised.
The beneficiaries selected for this year include the St Mary Infirmary, the Port Maria Hospital, Islington High School, Highgate Corner League, Highgate United Football League, St Mary Police Youth Club, Beecham Hill Primary and Infant School, Half Way Tree Primary School and Buff Bay Primary School.
A St Mary Mi Come From takes place on Friday, August 5 at Gray's Inn Sports Complex, Annotto Bay, St Mary. This year's lineup includes reggae artistes Barrington Levy, Coco Tea, Sizzla, Beenie Man, Jah Cure, Bounty Killer, Jah Vinci, Turbulance, I-Wayne, Lady G, Toya, Duane Stephenson, and King Shango himself, Capleton.
The theme this year is Celebrating Unity.
